Summary

The penultimate volume of the mighty Riftwar Cycle

War rages in Midkemia but behind the chaos there is disquieting evidence of dark forces at work.

Jim Dasher’s usually infallible intelligence network has been cleverly dismantled; nowhere is safe. He feels that the world is coming apart at the seams and is helpless to protect his nation.

Quiet palace coups are underway in Roldem and Rillanon; and King Gregory of the Isles has yet to produce an heir. In each kingdom a single petty noble has risen from obscurity to threaten the throne.

Lord Hal of Crydee and his great friend Ty Hawkins, champion swordsman of the Masters’ Court, are entrusted with the task of smuggling Princess Stephané and her lady-in-waiting, the lovely but mysterious Lady Gabriella, out of Roldem to a place of greater safety. But is there any safe haven to be found?

Meanwhile, Hal’s younger brothers Martin and Brendan are attempting to hold the strategic city of Ylith against an onslaught of Keshian Dog Soldiers, and a mysterious force from beneath the sea. The Kingdom might lose Crydee and recover; but if Ylith falls, all is lost.

An unknown player appears to orchestrating these conflicts. Can Pug and the Conclave of Shadows track down this source before Midkemia is destroyed?

Disappointing

A real shame, another great book that should not have been spoiled by poor narration.

Story Good, Narrator Awful

A good story ruined by poor narration.

For whatever reason, Peter Joyce doesn’t narrate this book. A real shame because after so many volumes you become used to the style and voices he used and so expect the continuity for the penultimate book.

Instead we get... erm, we get... I don’t know. An amateur. A child-like reader. A narrator who lacks the gravitas to read this book to its fullest potential. It’s a real shame especially given (after a number of chapters fighting to get use to the narration for I couldn’t give up) the importance of the volume and that it was a good story in the end.

The narrator only has a few voices so the more characters that appear in the same scene start to sound the same. Magnus sounds like Keanu Reaves. Wrong. Most females have same voice so hard to tell who’s talking. Sandreena sounds too pathetic and weak. Amirantha sounds little bit simple.

I have given it 4 stars because the story is good and rescues it from being a 3 star. Maybe it’s a 3.5 stars because of the performance of the narrator.

Good story, awful narration

Such a shame. The narration was immature, soulless and without any competence. Wooden character voices, poorly read. Luckily there was a rollicking good story to hang it off, but what a disappointment in what has been, so far, a beautifully narrated series.

Great book, why why why change narrator??

Compelled to finish the book even though the narrator’s performance is very poor. I don’t understand the reason for change but it’s a mistake especially given Peter returns for the next book.

It should be re-recorded and issued FOC to all that have purchased. Only fair dice were now 30 books in!!

Disappointing doesn’t cover it.

Why?????.

Why spoil a series narrated beautifully by Peter Joyce.

This narrator does not do justice to this author or story.

Different Narrator

Great story that feels like it should have been two books not one. Reminded me of Silverton more than any other book so far.

Great story.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes, it has a few surprises and I'm looking forward to the next book.

What three words best describe John Meagher’s voice?

Monotone as there is no difference between the narration and when the characters speak, not as bad as some of the reviews I've read but not as good as the previous books. I think we've been spoilt in the rest of the series having Peter Joyce who brings the characters to life. John doesn't have that knack.

Could you see A Crown Imperilled being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

I'd love to see the entire series made into film

Lifeless reading

Excellent book murdered by a lifeless narrator with no timing. Computer generated voice would be better.
