About this listen

Ghosts can’t seem to keep their opinions to themselves. Seventeen-year-old Nate Shaw should know; he’s been talking to them since he was 12.

But they aren’t the only ones making his high school years a living hell.

All Nate wants is to keep his secret and keep his head down until he can graduate. That is, until the new boy, James Powell, takes a seat next to him in homeroom. James not only notices him, he also manages to work his way into Nate’s life.

But James has issues of his own. Between dead grandmothers and living aunts, Nate has to navigate the fact he’s falling in love with his only friend, all while getting advice from the most unusual places.

Ghosts, bullies, first love: it’s a lot to deal with when you’re just trying to survive senior year.

A few niggles story-wise.....

The narration was superb, and done by a guy who must be at least 20 years older than Nate and James, but certainly did them proud...well done Lawrence T. Lewis!! I absolutely loved this one even though it had a few niggly bits for me. The mum being frightened of Nate being able to speak to ghosts, and kicking him out of the house was really weird, especially as either she or her husband must've been aware that there was a strong possibility that one or both of their kids would inherit the 'ghost whisperer' gene. She needed a good kick up the backside, as did the lovely school bully Penny and her little sidekicks....actually, I would recommend poison for them come to think of it, I will not stand for bullying of any kind AND the other weird thing...as Tess mentioned in her review, why did James keep the fact that he was bisexual a secret from Nate when Nate had just bared his own soul and 'come out' to him??

Particularly chuffed for Nate who certainly deserved some happiness in his life after his stupid mother and all the bullying at school. James I liked from the start, and Aunt Susan was a great secondary character. As for 'Nana' and 'David'...your friendly neighbourhood ghosts, well we think they may may fade into the distance now that Nate and James are together. 4.5 stars from me.

enjoyable but not epic

It's a cute fun read, I really liked it but not super special. really enjoyed the characters and a bit of a supernatural twist to a classic story.

A inadequate, fluffy romance story

My only praise is that the narrator did a decent job. I can see the writer was trying to tell a good story but it just had no affect on me. They don't properly dive into what it's like having clairvoyance and the realistic impact it would have on everyone, most of the time it's shrugged off and I hardly believed this is what anyone would do with that power. The characters aren't given enough time to be fleshed out, I felt like they all had no personalities or depth. The romance was just full of fluff and played out like a teenager's daydream. I was so ready to hear about teenagers dealing with homosexuality, what I got was a totally unrealistic fantasy were every problem is swept under the rug to make room for the spontaneous romance that just solves everything.
