捜査一課長である堀越は課長室で、非常に部厚い配達証明付きの封書を受け取った。
差出人には「関西経済通信」編集長の花崎という名前が書いてあった。心当たりがない人物からと思いながらも手紙を読んでいくと、北園壮助という男が花崎に託されたと記してあった。そして、その北園は三日前は亡くなったのだという。

北園壮助という名前を思い出しきれずにいるまま、一気にその中身を読み終えた堀越は驚きを隠せずにいた。

それは渋谷署長時代に迷宮入りとなった、東和銀行渋谷支店で発生した強盗事件についてのことだった。その事件の秘密が事細かに解き明かされていたのだ。

事件は銀行の現金輸送時を狙って行われた。
突然一人の男が行員に体当たりして、落とした輸送袋を奪い去ったのである。
男は北園の住むアパート「松涛荘」の北園の隣室に逃げてきたが、そこから忽然と消え去ってしまい、追いかけて来た警察も犯人を取り逃がすことになってしまった。

だが、北園はその犯人が隣人であり、友人である大江幸吉であると気付いてしまう……
