Very impressive.
Awesome details of small town early 20th century Ontario, the competing religious factions, WW1, and that’s as far as I’ve got. Very good.

A depressing, poignant look at the human condition
Very good, calm narration. The book is a classic. There is a pervasive sense of dread throughout, but also (rare) moments of surprising levity. I found myself smiling out of nowhere a few times (but this happened only 3 or so times, to be clear. This is not a happy book.)
The writing is a product of its time, but feels timeless all the same. I had a neighbour who sadly seemed to be in a similar way to the protagonist of this book, and there were parts in it I also related to on a personal level.
I listen to Japanese audiobooks to train my Japanese, but after 10 years of quite dedicated study I am at a fairly high level. This is not a book that is easy to understand, especially in a pure audio format. It is really modern Japanese in some ways, but is still literary and has linguistic conventions from 1948, when the original was published. If you use Japanese audio books to practice Japanese, and are not either at a high B1 or C1 level, this book may be frustrating to listen to.
