野間五郎は物忘れの天才であり、友人から「空気男」と呼ばれている。

野間はある日なんとなく乗った列車で、メフィストフェレスさながらの風貌の黒服紳士に出会う。何も活字が印刷されていない本をニヤニヤ笑いながら読んだり、口の中から常に紐を垂らしていたりする妙な男であった。気になった野間は彼が列車を降りてからも、後をつけるが、あっさりと尾行に気づかれてしまう。

彼の名は伊東錬太郎といい、プラクティカルジョークの名手――すなわち「冗談のいたずら」の達人だった。
伊東に興味を持った野間はプラクティカルジョークの魅力に開眼し、いつしか二人してプラクティカルジョークを実践していくようになった。

周囲をけむに巻きながら、その語り草となっていくようないたずらを仕掛けることに、野間はすっかり夢中になっていった。

その傍ら野間は美しい伊東の妻・美耶子に心奪われていく。
夫のある身と知りながら、その不思議な魅力に溺れていくのだが……
