About this listen

An Education in Pleasure

Married young to a man hand-picked by her father, Elizabeth Petre is an ideal Victorian lady. She has borne two sons and endured 16 years of selfless duty in a passionless marriage. Craving a man's loving touch yet loyal to her wedding vows, Elizabeth is determined to seduce her coldly indifferent husband. She knows of only one man who can teach her the erotic secrets of love.

A Lesson in Love

The bastard son of an English countess and an Arab sheik, Ramiel Devington was reared to embrace both Western culture and Eastern pleasure. Scorned by society and challenged by prim Elizabeth's request, he undertakes her instruction in the art of sensual delight. But when the lessons become a temptation neither can resist, Elizabeth is forced to choose between obligation and a bold, forbidden passion....

An interesting story well-read

On the whole it is a rather well-written story and the narrator is good. I thought the unraveling of the relationship of the minor characters a little too much to be gullible, but the book is otherwise well-researched on Sir Burton's translation.

Too long and unnecessarily sordid

Triggers: rape, child murder, child molestation, incest.

I read a lot of erotic novels and this was dealt with very well and I liked the chemistry between Elizabeth and Ramiel. I did, however, find the sordid family saga over the top and quite unnecessary.

There were blatant inaccuracieswhich galled, e.g. electrification in London took place in the early 1900s and Prime Minsters are elected.

Also why is it that it took Elizabeth 16 years to realise she was in a loveless marriage and 12 years before she thought of seducing her husband? I also find it odd that Ramiel took her back after her horrid treatment of him. He deserved better.

Sadly, the book didn't have a good enough editor who should have deleted swathes of this book.

I won't be bothering with another book by this author.
