About this listen

From author Jescie Hall comes this heart-wrenching tale of addiction and a transcendent love that fights despite adversity in this spin-off instant attraction romance.

Addiction is my weakness.

A cruel temptress that follows me wherever I go.

Slowly dragging me down until I drown.

Until she shows up.

Johanna.

My life preserver in this ocean of drugs and madness.

She's a total enigma, as chaotic as they come. A vixen who lives her life without limits.

But her demons are greater than mine, and they threaten to drown her right alongside me.

I need her as much as she needs me.

We can either hang on and save each other, or we can both sink into oblivion, letting our pasts, our memories, our addictions be the anchor that weighs us down.

Contains mature content, including heavy drug use, self-inflicted pain, trauma, and graphic sexual content.

Totally awesome

You will need a box of tissues and time to cry whilst listening to this book. Once again Joe Arden knocks it outta the park with the narration, the emotion he puts in is just… wow!! C. J. Bloom is the perfect complement with her narrative too. But they couldn’t have smash my heart to tiny pieces if it wasn’t for Jecsie’s writing, l don’t know how she does it. No one knows how to evoke every emotion throughout a story like she does.

"I'm the wall collecting the graffiti of her past"

I adored this book. I listened to it in one sitting ,I went through so many different emotions while listening to it. The book does get very heavy at certain points so please do look at the trigger warnings before you listen.
Jescie Hall is becoming one of my favourite authors and I think this might be my favourite book from her so far. The narrators are insanely talented. Joe and CJs emotions throughout the book floored me. They were the perfect picks for Kid and Johanna.

Emotional & Intense! Amazing Story & Narration🎧

Jescie Hall is the queen of dark and twisted, she masters it like no other by putting her own unique spin on it and brings you along for the ride, a dark and twisted, emotional rollercoaster ride. The uniqueness is not just bringing you into a dark and twisted world, but into the mind of her characters and wow the minds they have and what goes thru them. Hold on tight because it is a wild ride, one that will not only wow you but will blow you away too. Kid and Johanna’s story is an angsty one, two broken souls whose pieces fit together flawlessly, if they let them. Kai Immanuel Decker, aka Kid, intrigued me in Hawke’s book, always looking out for Cole and was good for a laugh, though you could tell there was more to him that met the eye. His issues run deep, so does his dedication to his friend Hawke, and he goes with him to help with his new beach house and business. Kid is into drugs, not only doing them but selling them, which creates more problems for him, some unexpectedly. When he meets Cole’s older sister Johanna “Han” he fell heads over heals for her. With his addictive traits and tendencies, she becomes his new addiction and obsession, his need for Han, all of her. Han is quirky and marches to the beat of her own drum, she dabbles in drugs and has is only one of her bad habits, her others include destructive ones and a tendency to run when feelings are involved. The complexity and depth of these characters is phenomenal, peeling back layers and getting a look inside their minds is amazing and so is finding out why they are the way they are, especially with what is going on with Han. Ms. Hall takes these characters on a journey and puts them wringer making them work to find their happiness. As always, the writing, plot and world building are fantastic, as are the character growth and development. There are some heart pounding moments in this book, the drama is non-stop, and it is high in angst, emotions, steam and a whirlwind romance.  Jescie Hall, thank you for another exceptional and moving story, one that will stay with me for a very long time.

🎧📚🎧And for wonderful narration, Joe Arden and CJ Bloom worked their magic and did an amazing job bringing these characters to life. Their portrayal of the characters was perfection, Arden as Kid wowed me completely, grasping the rawness of his emotions, like no other, his intensity, his wit, and yes, it was his performance that had my heart pounding. Bloom was just as amazing in her role as Johanna, grasping every aspect of her personality, her quirkiness, brokenness and torment, as well as her wit. Both were equally amazing performing the roles of the secondary characters, too. These two made a great team, their voices complemented each other and their performance elevates the story to another level. Thank you for another exceptional listen.

Epic audio!!!

Audiobook review: Narrated by Joe Arden and CJ Bloom

This story, first and foremost, is so emotional it left me with a true ache in my heart. The book is written in first person but from Kai/Kid's POV which is a refreshing way to experience a romance that I really enjoyed. Kid's vulnerability had me crying for him so many times. Then we have Han...this girl is amazing on so many levels, but the struggle she experiences through the majority of this book is heartbreaking. The way Kid loves her with such intensity was epic. The depth these two characters have leaves so many levels we get to see uncovered and keeps a healthy interest in their growth throughout the story. I love the journey of their relationship, from the very first meeting through the epilogue. Not only is this an important love story, but I love the mental health and addiction representation and the way it's portrayed so realistically. There is a heavy list of content warnings that should be heeded, even if that is not something you typically worry about. The subject matter is represented in depth so it's best to be prepared.

This audiobook had me speechless for a long time. I literally had to sit and recover from the experience that was Joe Arden and CJ Bloom bringing Kid and Han to life. Not only was this one of the most beautifully written stories, the performance was so exciting and entertaining. If ever a performer was born for role, it is Joe Arden as Kid. I lost myself listening to him fully embody this character. Chapter 6 alone should earn him all the awards in the world. CJ Bloom as Han was perfection. She captured every emotion so well, and there were a lot of them. She has so much personality that really shone through in her performance.

I highly recommend everyone listen to this on audio, whether you've read the book already or not. It truly is an epic experience and has cemented both the author and the narrators as some of the best in the business.

My lips were on it first!

🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶

Mariachi Band!

Wow, where do I start?! #Kid by #JescieHall is a standalone follow up to #Hawke and should have been called Raw because that's what it felt like to read this book.

It is dark and depressing, but if you enjoy reading about shattered characters mending their broken pieces together, then this is for you, but ... be ⚠️ this is nothing like Hawke, with lots of triggers so, if you have any, I wouldn't try it.

It was very incisive and beautifully written, giving you an understanding of what drug addicts go through mentally, whether recreationally or to numb trauma, and also its effect on those around them.

Kid is a drug dealer and obsessive by nature. He is sailing through life being the centre of attention with his ease and sense of humour, which #JoeArden brings to life when he's tripping on LSD and having a discussion with Norbert, a stuffed duck!

Then Kid meets the broken, closed and enigmatic Han, who is Cole's elder sister (from Hawke), who is good at disappearing when life gets too much. Kid becomes totally fixated and is determined to find out all her secrets.

The relationship between Kid and Han was incredible, in the way their brokenness brought them together, were able to see into each other's souls and ultimately able to fix each other through their mutual love and understanding.
Personally I would have liked to have seen more of Kid's and Han's background story as well as more information about the drug ring, which I felt tied up too easily.

The #duetnarration by #JoeArden and #CJ Bloom was exceptional with Joe capturing Kid in his manic and funny phases; and Carly Bloom excelling in getting under Han's skin and tortured soul.

Although I received a copy of this ALC from #bluenoseaudio, all opinions are my own.

Joe MF Arden you amaze me!

This is a raw & heartbreaking story dealing with heavy drug use, addiction & trauma and what those things do to a person & those surrounding them. So check content and TWs if necessary.

This is connected to the author's other book Hawke and although it can be read as a standalone I advise reading Hawke first as that is where we are first introduced to our main male character Kai aka KID. The story is told from his POV, he is spending the summer with Hawke trying to figure out his life when he meets Coles (fmc from Hawke) older sister Johanna aka Han and is instantly drawn to her as he sees another scarred soul just trying to survive like he is. These two are both so broken in different ways and initially are toxic together and encourage each others spiralling behaviours, but over the course of the book we see KIDs inner monologue and perspective slowly change and all he wants is to understand, be with and love Han in her darkness and beyond. Because the story is told in only his POV I struggled to understand why he fell for her so hard and so fast as although we see Han through his eyes, we don't get her POV so her personality and who she is was lost at the beginning so his instant obsession with her made little sense to me, as other than being attracted to her looks I had no reason for him to be so enamoured with her. This book does not glamourize drug use, it depicts the harsh and dangerous reality of it and what can drive a person to numb the pain of their reality.

CJ Bloom & Joe Arden were incredible. As the story is mainly told from KIDs pov you obviously get more of Joe's performance and what a performance it was, the way this man emotes and makes you feel every gut wrenching moment with voice alone is beyond talent.

There are some scenes in this book that involve OW in a sexual way so be aware of that going in, although it isn't cheating as the MCs are not together when these moments take place. The spice between the MCs is good & frequent once it gets going. 🌶🌶🌶

An emotional and heartwarming ride

This was my first experience with this story in particular, it is no secret that I am obsessed with Jescie and I was so excited to read this with this being the only book I had not consumed yet.

The perfect opportunity came with the audiobook and I was obsessed. Joe’s performance as Kid is absolutely phenomenal. I lived for it. This is an emotional book that touches on a lot of sensitive subjects, it is a beautiful book that will stay with me forever.

The writing, the performances, the nuances in this book, everything was perfection and it finished far too soon for my liking. I cannot rave about this book enough.
