Summary

I never meant to be here: tied up in bed next to a serial killer. When I followed him home, I was just playing Nancy Drew. Trying to find out his secret. His kiss was intoxicating, and I thought he was harmless. I was wrong. Nancy Drew never ended up in a basement, handcuffed to a radiator, teased to the edge of insanity, begging to be let go. Soon I stopped begging to be let go. Soon I started begging to be his.

A Guilty Pleasure

Surprisingly and gently romantic in places as the serial killer and his inadvertent captive "trade" in actions, reactions, knowledge, small freedoms and growing kindness. I tried this as it was in the Plus catalogue and was sucked in to listening into the early hours, and through lunch, and while cooking... It's less about blood and violence and more about discovery and opening up to someone who just might understand your darkest secrets. Well written and very enjoyable. I'll definitely be revisiting this book again, it's the kind of story you reach for on a rainy Sunday afternoon as a guilty comfort read.

I loved this book.. Dark captive romance done well 4.5 🌟 & 3.5🌶 🌶 🌶🌶. narrator did a great job playing both parts. (male narrator would have been a great addition though) . would have loved an epilogue

I so didn’t want to like it

But I loved it. I was so sure that a serial killer was a stupid idea for a story and fought as hard as Cat not to like or love it. How can you feel sorry for a killer? Well I’ve read thousands of books and many of them crime stories and never shed a tear for a killer not even under the saddest circumstances. But this story was so different and still right in a weird way. There are dark stories which ooze a lot of violence and some cross the line but Aubrey Dark has a gift to sail at the borderline and still get it right without the need of open violence or leaving behind loads of broken bodies which can give thrills but this is much more interesting and satisfying. Will need to explore more of her dark mind books for sure.

Nope

I was not a fan of this book.

The decisions Cat makes really did not make sense to me.  Who goes around following strangers to their house, running past their private security gates not announcing themselves and looks through their windows?  Even if she is damaged goods and has a crush on this guy, she only met him once and he flat out turned her down.  Why would she then hunt him down and impose herself on him?  The excuse of tracking him down to give him a random piece of paper is not strong enough.

The balance between the spice and actual story content was off.  Too much overly long spice scenes, very little storyline and not much progression to the story.  The characters even stay in one location for the majority of the book so it gets repetitive.  I didn't care for the characters and I found their dialogue really annoying.  For ex, at one point they have this long conversation about whether "THIS is real" or not.  Just going back and forth saying "Is THIS real", "This CAN'T be real", "It IS real", etc.  I just didn't see the point of it and much of the conversations the two characters had.

I feel just based on the fact that Gav was a serious serial killer, the story should have been a lot more sinister than it was.  The audiobook also would have benefitted from male and female narrators.
