About this listen

Liam loves his life as a linguist and trader on the Rownt homeworld, but he has ignored his heart and sexual needs for years. After escaping the horrors of war, he wants a boring life. He won't risk letting anyone come too close because he won't risk letting anyone see his deeply submissive nature. For him, submission comes with pain. Life burned that lesson into his soul from a young age.

This fear keeps him from noticing that the Rownt trader Ondry cares for him. Ondry may not understand humans, but he recognizes a wounded soul, and his need to protect Liam is quickly outpacing his common sense. They may have laws, culture, and incompatible genitalia in their way, but Ondry knows that he can find a way to overcome all that if he can just overcome the ghosts of Liam's past. Only then can he take possession of a man he has grown to respect.

Contains mature themes.

Very good, unique worldbuilding

This series is fascinating with a unique alien world and unconventional but sweet love stories.
The "elder voice" can get a little bit annoying when there is a lot of "elder-monolog", but otherwise the narrator is very good.

I really like all the books in the series and never got bored through any of them.

Really enjoyable

New author to me. Great narrator as usual. Really enjoyable, with a D/s theme. Would recommend.

Flawless! Inventive! Original!

With nothing to criticize, Claimings is flawless, inventive and original. Move past the odd title; ignore the book cover’s dodgy artwork; and forget the blurb. Read to intelligently and thought provokingly explore communication, love, romance, intimacy and sexual pleasure. That the Dom/Sub relationship is between a purple alien and a human satisfyingly scratches my sci-fi itch too because, make no mistake, Ondry and the Rownt are an otherworldly species. All characters are wonderfully drawn with satisfyingly villainous villains! Ms. Gala’s writing is very clever never succumbing to traditional tropes like ‘I Love You’ masquerading as emotional depth or Marriage as a synonym for commitment – she says so much more with freshness and originality. For me, Claimings is all kinds of happy and positivity.

John Solo obviously cared enough to distinguish and distinctly voice everyone. I highlight his stilted, clipped and almost monotone delivery for Ondry and the slower, more lyrical cadence for the Grandmothers. The Rownt do sound ‘alien’ but Mr. Solo imbues their vocalization with gentleness that they resonate. A soft baritone for Liam is perfect and with great skill, the narrator conveys his open, accepting nature. Mr. Solo is so expressive here, creating an immersive listening experience. With his vocal tics and all, his performance is remarkable.

TLDR: The writing is flawless, the story is original, the alien world is imaginative and the protagonists are endearing! I only thought to try this book because it was free in the Plus Catalogue. Four credits later, I own the entire Claimings Series because I revisit this world so often.

Surprisingly good

I almost didn't read this book. I was rather surprised that I really enjoyed it. It is not the type that I would ordinarily read/listen to. I thought the characters and storyline were interesting and had a few chuckles at the language barrier between the two races. I also like the bonus stories because they gave short versions of events in the book from the aliens point of view since the main part of the book was written from the humans' perspective of events and experiences. I thought the narrator did a good job. He had a good voice and did well with the characters. I always knew which character was speaking.

Science Fiction meets Spicy

For me this is first and foremost a wonderful piece of world building SF. That alone appeals to me as a long term enjoyer of this kind of fiction. The M/M romance feels like a secondary aspect to the novel which, like the world-building does a truly excellent job of exploring how very alien two different cultures can be and the complications that adds to any kind of relationship - whether the interstellar economic one that is the focus of the first part of the novel or the romantic and sexual relationship that has been hinted at throughout but only truly develops in the second half of the novel. Very brave of the author to write a gay male romance where the aliens truly are alien and not just slightly altered humans. It’s rarely attempted and for me this is the only attempt that has actually been successful. If like me you truly enjoy both SF and MM romances then this is definitely a book for you. If you really hate one category or the other you’re probably best giving it a miss. But otherwise, since this is in the plus catalogue it’s well worth giving it a try and finding out if it’s a combination you do enjoy. I’m off to listen to the other two titles in the series.

Loved it but ended too soon.

I loved the unique story. I like the idea of a more subservient role and a protector role this story develops.

The only thing that didn’t work for me was thinking of the two main characters as a couple. Even though they were different species, it’s a bit sad that they can’t actual have mutually intimate interactions.

I was surprised when it ended, it seemed too soon. But, the bonus stories told from other perspectives was interesting.

Surprisingly Compelling

I don’t usually listen to this genre, but decided to try something new. I was surprised to find myself drawn in by the characters and the world building. I am absolutely going to download the other books in the series!

Lyn gala writes amazing sci-fi romance!

Lyn Gala is so good at alien romances. After reading Earth Fathers Are Weird and its sequel, I was excited to check out this authors other works.
In Claimings, Tails, and Other Alien Artifacts Humans are on the Rownt homeworld. Relations are new and tentatively peaceful. The main contact between Humans and Rownt is through trading.
Liam is a human trader. Ater regular trading meetings with the Rownt, Ondry, a trust is built which leads to their relationship growing even more.
love how the author portrayed the communication between these two species. It made this sci-fi romance feel real. Rownt and Human society are very different, but through communication (which is difficult at points) and they make it work.
Looking forward to getting to the rest of this series and learning more about this world, and about Liam and Ondry.
