Summary

Jayne Shepherd has spent his life blending in. He smiles. He laughs. He’s likeable. He’s also a sociopath. His emotions are limited. Love, fear, and desire don’t exist in his world. Until he meets Elijah.

Elijah Dunne had everything. Third generation Hollywood royalty. Child star. Untouchable. Until one man ruined it all. Elijah fled LA to try to forget, but now, he’s back on top and back on a monster’s radar. Elijah doesn’t think he’ll ever feel safe. Until he meets Shepherd.

Elijah and Shep only have one thing in common. They both wear masks. Shep makes Elijah feel protected. Seen. Elijah makes Shep just feel. Now that he’s had a taste, he’s not about to let him go. Everybody warns that what they have isn’t real. Shep is obsessed with Elijah, not in love. But Elijah craves Shep’s obsession. He can’t imagine life without him.

In Hollywood, being a sociopath is more of a life skill than a diagnosis. Could Shep be the monster Elijah needs to finally slay his demons?

Captivating is the second book in the Elite Protection Services Series and contains age-gap, cum-play, voyeurism, and one very sexy interrogation scene with an HEA and no cliff-hangers.

Warning: This book contains talk of past child sexual abuse.

Dark and compelling

Ok, I'll admit I was skeptical that I would buy a book where I was supposed to believe a sociopath would make a good partner for anyone or that I could in any way root for that character. However, the plot James has constructed for Jayne and Elijah makes this perfectly plausible and I just loved this story. This is a dark story of obsession blended with the protector trope and it hooked me from chapter one. I enjoyed the performance of Liam DiCosimo here. I thought his understated delivery was perfect for the tone of the story.

Fascinating story w/great characters

I found this addition to the series utterly fascinating, particularly Jayne’s character. I have always seen sociopaths depicted as bad people, the bad guy, or a serial killer. Here we have one that’s not the villain of the story. The blurb had my interest piqued, and the story kept it there.

These two men are very different, yet...not completely. One major key to their persona is the same...they both pretend, and they can fake it better than anyone. They also can see past the mask the other is wearing, and it’s as if that fact, alone, draws them to each other. Like attracts like, and these men are actually kind of perfect for each other.

This story was well written, well thought out, and you can also see that in the characters Onley developed for this addition to the series. We get to see Linc and Wyatt, again. It was nice seeing them from an outside perspective. I enjoyed the flow of story, and how the relationship was built up. It was easy getting lost in the narration.

Liam DiCosimo is fairly new to the narration scene. I can already see growth in his voice between book one and two. I didn’t care for the voice he gave Linc, personally, but he stayed in character throughout book one, so he gets props to that. I did have to briefly listen to Linc talk, but he gets credit for keeping true to the voice he gave Linc. So often characters get different voices when they aren’t the lead MC anymore. I enjoyed the voices he gave Elijah and Jayne. I thought they were spot on for their character. Spot. On. I’m interested in watching DiCosimo continue to develop as a narrator. He has a lot of potential.

Perfection

Story: Two guys with bumps, bruises and heavy baggage. Just as the title suggests, the chemistry and connection these two have from the very stars is absolutely captivating! Every book in this series was amazing, but this one must be my favorite! Everything about the story and the MCs totally drew me in from the get go. As popular as the bodyguard and his charge trope is, this one is really unique in terms of personalities the author has created!
Narration: A great voice for the story. I liked the performance a lot and it conveyed the emotions really accurately in my opinion.

I like the story but the narrator isn't my fave

I've only listened to a couple of books by Liam DiCosimo, and the raspy quality of his voice always makes me thirsty. I mean, it's his voice so it is what it is, but it sounds like he needs a glass of water or a good throat clearing. I also don't think his voice characterizations are that great and my attention drifts at times while listening (they all sound a little same-y and the reading is kind of melodramatic instead of realistic; I kind of feel like I'm listening to 1970s theater, blue eyeshadow on the men and all). There are some books I will listen to on the strength of the performance of the narrator even if I don't think the book looks spectacular, but he isn't one of the those narrators.

Luckily, the story is quite good. I usually recommend this book when people want something a little outside of the usual alpha protector trope. You've got an alpha protector in this story...in the extreme. It works, though, without getting to that point where you want the other character to grow a backbone already. Here's my original review of the book:

When I read the blurb for this book I thought, "No, this book is not for me." I'm not really a fan of hurt/comfort in the first place, but even so I did love the first book in this series and decided to give it a try. Even though I had a lot of reservations, I did still really like the book. Love takes all different forms and I like that this author tried something different. Elijah and Shep are maybe not the most realistic couple, but they're definitely one of the most interesting.

As other people have mentioned, things did get a little iffy at the end, but I guarantee it's not even close to what you're thinking. I wouldn't call it dark, as others have said, but it was a little bit weird maybe. I don't have a lot of triggers and I don't really like being emotionally filleted by a book, and while there was some heavy material contained within, the book really was more concerned with portraying an honest journey between two people who view the world a little differently than most than it was about creating melodrama just for the sake of it. I did stay up way past my bedtime to finish this book, which is not normally my thing, so I will say that Ms. James definitely knows how to write a good page-turner!

All in all I would recommend this audiobook to those who prefer their books in this medium.

There are no words

There really are no words to properly explain my feelings for this book. Complex characters, complex emotions and a complex plot...Onley James kept me completely hooked as I read through Captivating. They have a talent for writing - that’s for sure! I was kept hooked when reading - wanting to know what happened and I was NOT disappointed! Just as much so with the audio, even though I had already read it - Liam DiCosimo really brought to life the characters. They’re a great narrator and fit perfectly with this book.

Awesome

This story was amazing. The characters were amazing, Shepherd was the most original character I have ever read about/listened to. The story was interesting, spicy, dark and such a good listen. Liam dicosmo is an excellent narrator. He did a fabulous job with this story! I can't wait for more in this series.

Captivating!

This was the most apt title for a book I've ever found. I was totally captivated by every single part of this book. From the great characters to the thrilling plot, I found it difficult to put it down. Silly work and video conferences that you need to mandatorily assist to. *pouts*

Shep is a high-functioning sociopath and I was totally in awe of both Onley James and Liam DiCosimo, Ms. James because she wrote him and really did a great job with his characterization, making him totally believable, and Mr. DiCosimo because he outdid himself with the nearly robotic voice he used for him. I was totally sold on him. And Elijah, well, he was just perfect for Shep. He needed someone who put him first, who would protect him from whoever wanted to harm him, and Shep was that. They fitted so well together, both in and out of the bedroom, or against the door, or over the table, you get my drift. LOL

I loved catching up with the EPS guys, Wyatt and Charlie. I could have done without Molly/Lucifer, and the bad guys, but it was satisfying to see them get their comeuppance.

Liam DiCosimo did a fantastic job with all the characters, but his Shep was definitely my favorite. The emotion, the characterization, everything just combined into making this one heck of an audiobook. One you definitely need in your life.

Captivating - interesting

This book was a very interesting listen/story. I started listening, not sure what to expect. I was engaged and pleasantly surprised by how different the experiences were from your typical romance book, yet in the end, love remains the binding force. The narrator was okay. I speed up a little, and it helped adjust more to my preference.

Tantalizingly twisted and deliciously devious

This is a very unique and tantalising story, with pain, revenge, healing and transcendence over the past and perceived characters traits, these two are a twisted match made in heaven.
There is so much packed into this story and to see the growth, progress and resolution was never what I expected but is oh so good.
Shep and Elijah are very unique characters on their own but somehow complement each other perfectly.
I really enjoyed this one and had to know what happened next and needed to know the bad guys would be dealt with and boy were they! way to go Shep.
I'm loving this series and can't wait for poor Robby's story and HEA up next
