About this listen

Moira Hayes hadn't seen Kenneth Woodfall in nearly eight years...nor did she want to see this man who stirred such feelings of anger in her. After all, he was the reason, though indirectly, for her brother's death.

But Kenneth isn't willing to forget the past, a time he shared with his first and only love, Miss Moira Hayes. Kenneth is more than willing to forgive. If only Moira can, too....

A heroine to dislike

Listening to this book I found myself shouting swear words to the worst heroine Mary Balogh has ever written. She waited three months to tell him of her pregnancy (did she think it would go away?) Then during a miscarriage when he insisted on staying with her, calling her his love and crying, the following day she said she couldn’t abide seeing him ever. So he left when he should have stayed. Throughout this story Moira was argumentative and horrible to him. Getting them together took aaaages. I disliked her so much that if it had been a book I would have thrown it across the room. Mary has written some of my favourite books. This is not one of them. But think you might have guessed this!

Annoying female character

I have read/listened to all of Mary Baloghs books. By a country mile this was the worst. I wanted Kenneth to leave her…. I turned it off at one point as it was like listening to my teenagers argue. A great book to read if you want to remember your less than perfect relationship is actually really great. Less romance more annoying 🤷‍♀️

Irritating heroine

I really wanted to slap this heroine, much as I love Mary Balogh's writing. If only the protagonists had talked to each other earlier; but then there would have been no story, and I suppose human beings can be like that.

I didn't like Moira at all

I like the story but I didn't like Moira. I found her childish and not pleasant person - I wasn't able to feel any empathy for her and felt really sorry for Kenneth.

Enjoyed it …

The story is charming even so at one point I started to get annoyed with the ridiculous behaviour of the heroine…

All went well at the end But it certainly wasn’t the best

Great narrator…

Annoying heroine

Moira thoroughly got on my nerves.
Well written book, though
Would read the last one in the trilogy just to catch up on these two

Such a tedious heroine

I did not enjoy this story as much a s I thought, some are better left in print.
I did not like the male voices depicted by the narrator, too much wallowing in thinking about this and that, made me nearly give up.
So much bitterness and resentfulness, scratchy women , all based on half truths,
I wanted to smack them all into having a 'tell the truth 'session.

An emotional complexity on human communication.

This was a good listen. A believable storyline on the relationship between a women and a men. In general some of the characters could be one I've encountered. I smiled and laughed often while listening. Excellent narration.

Not Balogh at her best

I normally love Balogh's books and I do enjoy the characterisations of her peripheral characters.

However, this book contained the most contrived and nonsensical sex scene (to drive the plot forward) that I've ever encountered, and I confess after that I rather lost interest. The first book in this series was also rather predictable, so perhaps this series just isn't for me! (I'll still probably listen to Book 3, because hope springs eternal!)

Rosalyn Landor however is a smooth narrator. Easy to listen to and able to inject a lovely warmth and humour into her narration, so 5 stars for her.

I'd say if you've not listened to/read a Mary Balogh book before then this probably isn't the series to start with. It's not bad, it just doesn't meet the high standard of other series. A shame because each book starts with such promise!
