About this listen

Why do you lose arguments with people who know MUCH LESS than you?

Why can you recognize that woman, from that thing...but can't remember her name?

And why, after your last break-up, did you find yourself in the fetal position on the sofa for days, moving only to wipe the snot and tears haphazardly from your face? Here's why: the idiot brain.

For something supposedly so brilliant and evolutionarily advanced, the human brain is pretty messy, fallible and disorganized. For example, your memory is egotistical. No, really. Conspiracy theories and superstitions are the inevitable effects of a healthy brain. And alcohol can actually improve your memory.**

In The Idiot Brain, neuroscientist Dean Burnett tours our mysterious and mischievous grey (and white) matter. Along the way he explains the human brain's imperfections in all their glory and how these influence everything we say, do and experience. Expertly researched and entertainingly written, this audiobook is for anyone who has wondered why their brain appears to be sabotaging their life, and what on earth it is really up to.

**Editor's note: please listen to the book before testing this conclusion.

From the hugely popular Guardian science blogger, a surprising, funny and mind-bending examination of how and why the brain sabotages our behavior.

as enjoyable as it was educational; very

This is now one of my classics along with Consciousness Explained. I know I've enjoyed a book when I decide to listen to it again from the start, so as to glean every last morsel of knowledge I can find.
the narration is also spot on, almost like listening to comedian who happens to be a neuroscientist.

Loved it!

It's surprising how much information can be absorbed, (by the brain!), when you're laughing. This book proves it. Highly accessible, without being silly; fascinating, without being heavy; soothing without ever being boring. I learned a hell of a lot, without having to concentrate hard. Dean Burnett is the best kind of teacher, and the narrator even sounds like him. Loved it.

A very interesting book.

It's a high level run through that gets you thinking!

If you go in with an open mind, pun intended!, you'll enjoy at least 3/4 of this book. Which 3/4 depends on you, the other 1/4 is unlikely to grab you since we all have inbuilt ideas even if we think we're very open.....and this book will explain why that sentence works.

There's some high level brain descriptions and detail that doctors might wish to know about but it was enough to give me, as a layman, enough information to understand the basis of the arguments and conclusions drawn. You'll pick up snippets of interest that you can use if you wish.

The narration was excellent and at times it didn't feel like an educational book. It felt like the he had first hand knowledge of everything, as though he'd written the book, very pleasurable to listen to.

You might find yourselves repeating bits to help them sink in, I know I did. Well worth listening to if you've an interest in why your brain does, and doesn't, do certain things.

Definitely worth a listen

Good susinct insight into the logic (or lack there of) behind our decision making processes and behaviours. A reasonable mix of technical details and real life examples to make it easy to follow.
Loved the narrator!

Absolutely loved this book

This book was fantastic, a great tour around the bonkers world of the human brain, explaining stuff in layman's terms with a beautiful balance of humour. The narrator did a great job too. I was actually hoping that the author was the narrator, and was thinking wow I'd totally love to go for a pint with this guy, he even SOUNDS like a damn nice bloke. Great job. Thoroughly recommended.

Really entertaining!

I thoroughly enjoyed the content of this book, very enlightening about the workings of our brains told in l clear language, for us the unwashed. .The narration is fantastic, sometimes I'd get uncontrollable giggles on the tube whilst listening to this. A fascinating, fun listen.
