About this listen

'Do you remember when we had the vote?'

In a world that's just a step away from our own, time travel is possible. But war is brewing - a secret group is trying to destroy women's rights and their access to the timeline. If they succeed, only a small elite will have the power to shape the past, present, and future.

Our only hope lies with an unlikely group of allies, from riot grrls to revolutionaries, their lives separated by centuries, battling for a world where anyone can change the future. A final confrontation is coming.

The Future of Another Timeline is a thrilling science fiction tale from Annalee Newitz, the founding editor of io9, about the lengths we'll go to make history.

Travelling through time to change the world

In this thrilling novel travelling through time is not only possible but officially part of life, all through the past and the known future, thanks to mysterious machines located all over the world. All kinds of studies and discoveries are made possible, as well as actual big and small changes in history, leading to different timelines. Indeed one of the main characters in the story, together with friends and unexpected allies, tries to make the crucial "edits" to change the world into a better, less bigoted, less misogynistic, less cruel place, and to fight against mysterious forces trying to sabotage the time machines. At the same time, she is also attempting to amend her personal timeline and prevent a tragedy. Wonderful story, lots of engaging, smart and memorable characters, and even actual punk rock music in this brilliant audiobook!

Alternate history of gender rights in North America

Very insightful historical references blended with a fun time travel dynamic. Puts the punk into cyberpunk literally. Loved the last book ,Autonomus, and this is equally pointed and entertaining. The only detractor is the inevitable tangle of who-remembers-what which turns into a headache shared even by the characters.
Highly recommended unless (or perhaps especially) if you happen to be a misogynist who hates 90’s punk.

Rock on

A time travel story that is original is a rare thing these days and the author delivers a great story.

The best book I've read in a while!

The narrator takes some getting used to, but it's well worth it. This is an awesome story of feminist activism and time travel! Super gripping plot and a great cast of characters. Wholeheartedly recommend!

Great premise, terrible narration

The idea is great but the narration is so awful I could barely push past the first chapter.

Ham fisted

I bought this book on the recommendation of a normally reliable reviewer and I had liked the author’ previous book. This was was a miss for me, too much on the strident side. I like a badass heroine but I am not super fond of psychotic murderers even when they are fighting on the ride side , unfortunately the main protagonist is just the latter. Overall the characters are anything but nuanced and I cannot say I cared much for any of them. The gendered dichotomy is ham fisted and on the whole I think this book does feminism a disservice. The whole enterprise is not aided by the performance. I noticed my partner would close the doors whenever I was listening , the voice is not to my liking....and I really struggled to keep up with who was who, I got seriously confused a few times.

disappointing

This was less about sci fi and more about female empowerment and abortion on demand. Fine if that's what you're hoping for but I wasn't. I also found the reader to have that really irritating US accent that really grates (on me so purely subjective). There is an interview with the author at the end and she sounds exactly like the narrator!
