About this listen

A powerful new crime thriller.

Thirteen-month-old Lily Hamilton is abducted from Ayr beach in Scotland while her parents are just yards away.

Three days later the distraught father turns up at private investigator Charlie Cameron's office. Mark Hamilton believes he knows who has stolen his daughter. And why.

Against his better judgment Charlie gets involved in the case and when more bodies are discovered the awful truth dawns: there is a serial killer whose work has gone undetected for decades.

Is baby Lily the latest victim of a madman?

For Charlie it's too late, he can't let go.

His demons won't let him.

Great storyline

When I first started listening to this the narrator very nearly put me off. His voice was for me very much an acquired taste. I'm glad I persevered as it's a brilliant storyline with engaging characters and I ended up loving the narrator.

Speed up the narration!

This is a good book. The narration is terrible. I think i would have much preferred to read it but speeding the narration up helped.

Great storyline. It kept me hooked

Such a good storyline. A baby disappears and the developments just unfurl and had me hooked right up until the end. & id read the kindle version! Owen Mullen is definitely 1 to follow. He's obviously just going to get better.
I find a good story just comes to life with an audio book and this 1 def did.
The narrator was very good and had such a yummy accent. I could listen to him all day.

Slow, slow oh so slow

Like another listener, I have had to up the speed of this really poorly narrated novel. There are plenty of twists and a good ending but its so slow and there are so many miserable characters including Charlie himself. I was confused as to why Jackie disliked Charlie so much. It seemed unrealistic and not really relevant. The book is over 12 hours long and as a consequence becomes somewhat rambling and frustrating at times, Oh .....and then there's a graphic sex scene which, again, isn't relevant and doesn't add to the tale.
I can't say I'll rush to listen to another Owen Mullen book and certainly wouldn't seek to listen to Mr McCulloch.

PI's family issues add good spice

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Due to the narration of this book which I will admit that I didn't enjoy, I had to listen to this book longer than I would have liked because I fell asleep a number of times through no fault of the author. The story had multiple layers, though, which got absorbed in the story.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I might have shortened it and put a few less characters in, as I think it may have some legs with his later books if it is more tightly focussed.

How could the performance have been better?

The voice of the narrator didn't suit me, I would have preferred someone who was a bit more lively.

Do you think Games People Play needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

He's already done two, Old Friends and New Enemies and Before the Devil Knows you are Dead.

Any additional comments?

Thanks to Bloodhound books for introducing me to a new author.

Reasonable listen

Always like to listen to books by Scottish authors and narrated by Scots when possible. Story, characters were enjoyable but felt the narration was a bit lack lustre.

Lost the will to live

I couldn’t finish this book. The story may have been good but it was like listening to Andy Murray (who would never be chosen as a narrator)

Good story - Difficult listen

I was disappointed with the narration, so much so I increased the speed considerably in order to get to the end. It was a good storyline and I will continue to follow Charlie Cameron's career with the Kindle version. (I hope there is one!)
